Prescription drug abuse and overdose has taken so many lives in America
that the White House classifies it as an epidemic. Sadly, our nation’s
veterans are some of the most at risk of becoming addicted to prescription
drugs. One in six Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have a substance abuse
issue. In 2012 alone, the Department of Veterans Affairs treated over
50,000 veterans for issues associated with opioids use, many of which were
overdoses. RT’s Perianne Boring takes a closer look at the growing problem.

I think this is a joke that veterans can’t use marijuana which is less
addictive and provides many of the same results with far fewer side
effects.
These pharmaceutical companies make no attempt to make less addictive drugs
because if people didn’t get hooked they wouldn’t rake in the profits.

I have a family member who is a physician at the VA. Physicians at the VA
are told to Evaluate. Medicate. Vacate. EMV is the standard by which is
doctor shall not spend more than 15 minutes with any vet with mental issues
related to PTSD and other conditions. ?
What made you think killing people for money wasn’t going to make you
crazy? We all know that’s you’ll be doing when you sign up can I feel sorry
for you? Should I feel sorry for you? Honestly the ONLY thing the
government can do for you is to give a pill the will make you feel nothing
which you took. another choice. . .?

Medication won’t cure mental illness like PTSD, it’s only a crutch that
needs to be taken away at some point. It’s that transition that starts to
cause the problems.?

the answer for everything

Why is Afghanistan opium production increasing? To provide medicine for

north korea & jamaica combined? that fell flat..but the point remains: it’s
a huge money machine – big pharma generates billions of dollars in profits,
even when they lie about test outcomes. they should never be allowed to
test their own medications. it should only ever be done by an independent
lab but that’s not what’s happening………even so, vets should have
access to effective pain relief b/c no one should unnecessarily suffer
physically. & the uneducated/uninitiated should not judge based on their
beliefs about what suffering is for another person, what it means for
another..but i hear that a lot, from out in the world, and also in hospital
re: patients i’ve had. it’s obnoxious & totally inappropriate & only
demonstrates a lack of education & compassion on the part of the person
trying to deny another one relief. for many patients, over the counter meds
will not do. they have a *right to relief* from physical suffering, no
matter what, as long as it is safe for them to take the medicine…..*but
they should also be closely monitored & treated for PTSD & whatever else
ails them*. but, sadly, they more often than not, get tossed aside after
returning home. & most who return & who qualify for disability have to wait
years to be approved, if they get approval at all. because it has become a
waiting game for both enlisted & also every day citizens who qualify. +
every year the wait gets longer, for all of them. the gov’t claims lack of
funds & soldiers are having to wait 3 or 4 years or more to get help. it’s
absurd & totally shameful that they are treated this way. & i believe that
before we loan or give billions of dollars away to other nations, we should
take care of our citizens first. & i tend towards the left, but i truly
believe no vet should ever have to worry about health care or if he or she
will have a home and enough food to eat for themselves and/or their
families. too many of them wind up on the streets because of this & then
they are lost to the system as well as their loved ones.?
