Drug Abuse Columbus: Alcohol: America’s Drug of Choice

A recent study showed that millions of Americans are turning to alcohol and drugs to relieve the discomfort of their stress-filled lives. However, like stress itself, these “pain-killers” are far from being considered a new approach. In our society alcohol is the most widely used drug today, but certainly not the only one.

For the majority of users alcohol seems to be a relatively safe relaxant, but not for all. In fact, for that small group who cannot control their drinking; the price of alcohol abuse is enormous. The pain that it may relieves is nothing compared to the pain it causes them as they slowly become addicted to alcohol. Sooner or later alcohol will weaken and destroy those components of the self that give life meaning.
