However, let’s also assume that every hypothesis we have for a mechanism of action (i.e., how acupuncture could work to help cure addiction) can be shown to be false. The patients, however, all claim to know that the acupuncture is what cured them. Which of the following conclusions are supported by our data?

Basically, you can’t.
You can be supportive –encourage her to quit, or go to police to turn in her dealer, or to go to rehab, drive her to support groups, etc — but YOU CANNOT TAKE RESPONSIBLITY FOR HER PROBLEM, even if she tries to give it to you. It’s handy for addicts to hand off the problem to someone else, so many try to give away the responsibility to a friend or family. This doesn’t work. This absolves them of failing, and gives them no responsibility/investment in success.

I guess I grew up fairly sheltered because I know close to nothing about drug addiction. I know that drugs are bad and that they almost always destroy your life in one way or another if you don’t stop and get the right help. What I want to know are the signs and ways to tell if someone has done or is high on cocaine. Someone I really care about told me they do it. And that they want to stop. And that they do it cause they like it but almost immediately after doing it they feel horrible – depressed. Said they feel like they have no self-control over it.
