How Do You Curb a Shopping Addiction?
Question by jessa.cline: How do you curb a shopping addiction?
I have a shopping addiction. I shop when I’m mad, sad, happy, whatever. I often buy things I don’t need, and never wear them. A year later they are still in my closet with the tags still on them. I get a rush when I shop and it makes me happy- but when I get home I feel guilty about the money wasted and wish I hadn’t done it.

The best method is to replace it with another, more potent addiction.
For example, why not take up drinking or drugs? When you’re zoned out of your mind on heroin or crystal meth, shopping won’t even occur to you.
There’s also compulsive sex, compulsive gambling… so many to choose from. Make sure to pick the one that’s best for you, as we’re all individuals and we all have different addiction needs.

cut up the credit cards and get intrested in a new hobby…a sport or something
find a hobby that doesn’t cost anything or that much. seing, puzzles, puzzle books, reading, writing… sounds like you are an emotional shopper, i am an emotional eater… same dif.
cut up your credit cards, leave your check book and debit card at home. look for your local chapter of shoppers anonymous.

I literally froze my credit cards… put them in a ziplock bag filled w/ water and put them in the freezer. That way, if I want to buy something w/ them — I have to think about it, and wait until they unthaw.
I also don’t keep my debit card/checkbook w/ me… only about $ 20 per week — just a little spending money. That way, if you see something you want, you can only spend what you have.
After a few weeks of “being good” — reward yourself w/ one or two new items that you really do want 🙂
(whatever you do — DON’T take that 1st guys advice…. don’t replace this addiction w/ another WORSE addiction … geez… some people….)
Good luck — I know it’s hard!
Steal a shopping kart and then hang your clothes through out the house. Then walk through your house with kart in hand and pick up all your clothes, that way you feel like you are shopping but dont have to pay for anythin!
first thing, put your credit cards in a bag of water in the freezer! You may need them later to rent a car or use for plane tickets. take back all the clothes with tags on them a little at a time and use that money to buy something “recent”. Wear these though!!keep your cash on hand to a minimum – that is better for safety reasons anyway.it is an real problem- I saw it on Oprah
You are a woman after my own heart, because i can truly relate to you, i had the same problem, and what i did i started to budget myself so that i wouldn’t over spend, that way you will only ever buy things you really want, and also less things, but if you feel that the shopping is becoming a real problem then maybe you should think about talking to someone seriously about this. Shopping should be fun it sounds as if you are using it as a crutch to lift your mood, so it seems asthough there could be some deeper issues to face up front.
good luck.
